Master Sergeant Bobby “Pete” Gavin, 82, died peacefully in Fayetteville, NC September 13, 2017. An Army veteran of 26 years, he retired from service in October 1983.
MSG Bobby Gavin was born on September 11,1935 in Lumberton, NC to the late Mr. John Gavin and Mrs. Lula McIntyre. In 1957, he joined the armed forces and was assigned to numerous dental military detachments around the world. After graduating from First Sergeant training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas in 1981, he was assigned to a dental detachment unit in Fort Meade, Maryland where he retired honorably in October 1983. He received numerous medals and accomplishments to include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and many others.
MSG Gavin was a brave and loyal soldier who served his country honorably as well as a loving father and grandfather. He had a kind spirit of giving to those less fortunate when and where he could, a great sense of knowledge for business and a memory like a camera. His love for baseball and boxing were infectious and known by many family members and friends. MSG Gavin was a member of St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church in Lumberton, NC.
He is survived by his daughters, Phyllis Williams (Albert) of Midland, Ga, Pamela Gavin and one stepson, Lafayette Hilton (Patricia) of Columbus, Ga; his three grandchildren; Terrance West of Arlington, Va, Donovan Williams and Alicia Williams of Midland, Ga and one sister Judy Brooks of Jamaica, NY and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will take place at Sandhills State Veteran’s Cemetery on Monday September 18th at 12:00 noon with full military honors.
