David Pickens Jr.

 Retired Army SFC David Pickens Jr. went to be with the Lord on September 21, 2016 at his home in Fayetteville, NC. He was 83 years old, born on February 20, 1933 in Birmingham, Alabama. Shortly after graduating from Parker High school in Alabama he decided to join the U.S. Army where he proudly served his country for over twenty years. Upon retirement his second career was with Sears department store. He loved doing yard work, cheering for the Dallas Cowboys, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Mr. Pickens was an active member of the VFW Post 6018. He was a faithful member of Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church where he was an usher and Sunday school teacher. He also served on the church deacon board and prison ministry. He lived his life by putting God first and service to others.

He leaves to cherish his memory, the “apple of his eye,” wife of 60 years, Mary Pickens of Fayetteville. Daughters Alice Whitfield of Fayetteville, NC ; Annette Pickens of District Heights, MD, and son David Pickens (Regina) of Laurel, MD. Grandchildren Mary Whitfield, Tiffany Whitfield, Christopher Whitfield, David James Pickens IV, Jasmine Pickens. Great grandchildren Maya and Marci Williams. A host of family and friends from Alabama, Louisiana, New York and North Carolina.

Funeral services will be held on Monday September 26th, 2016 at 12:00 Noon in Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. Burial Cumberland Memorial Gardens. Viewing Sunday 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Mortuary. The family will receive friends at 202 Chloe Drive, Fayetteville.
